Dvs Movies

Hey all,
I'm wondering if anyone else agrees with me on this, that we should be able to buy dvs movies if we like them? I do have lots of dvd's of movies that I like, but it's because I have downloaded the dvs version and I know what's happening and I've seen some of them since I was a kid and I can tell someone who's blind what's happening. But for other movies that I haven't seen, sure I can download them, but wouldn't it be kind of cool if you were having a party or a lot of friends over, and you all wanted to watch a movie in dvs, and no one would have to tell the whole room what was happening? It's just kind of frustrating because I grew up without dvs until about 8 years ago or so, and I love it now. When I was akid I could see better so I thought it was stupid. But I'm dating someone who's totally blind, and if I pop in a dvd and there's part where there's no talking, he's like, what's going on and sometimes I have no idea myself, but I just got use to it. So most of the time, I just put hte dvs version on that I downloaded, if I have it. But it's frustrating like I said. Someone put up a petition a while ago on trying to get Disney to make their movies dvs, but I dunno how far that's gonna go, no one can sign it anymore anyway for whatever reason. But I guess I'll keep watching movies and enjoy them since I'm a big movie buff anyway. But like the deaf who have closed captioning, and all that, i think we should have dvs movies and they should be able to be sold at wallmart, and you can buy a regular movie for $5 like you always could, it just has that extra feature on it. But of course, they'd have to make the menus talk to, so it would cost more. Arg. Oh well, Anyway, let me know what you think. I'm curious to know if others think we should have dvs, or not, but why wouldn't you?

aww yeah, I totally understand what you're talking about. I think a lot of different groups are trying to work on making dvs movies more available for blind people without paying extra. Like now, you can buy dvs movies, but they're like, fourty something dollars, which is totally unfair. Why should we have to pay a ton of extra money just to buy movies that should be accessible for us. I think the partition to make Disney movies have audio description is still out there, not sure where you can find it though. But it would totally be cool if we can just walk in to a store and buy dvs movies, lolz

I know you can get them from blind-corners, and blindmicemart, but yes, that would be excellent to just go into a store and pick one up.

Yeah I can see pretty good but I like to listen to dvs movies sometimes especially if there's a lot of action in the movie and I think people should be able to buy them for $20 like the movies that have closed captioning.

Wow! Thanks for the sites! I want to buy movies to watch with my son like Cars, The Incredibles, The Lion King, stuff like that. My friend and I wanted to watch a certain movie, and becauseSerotek doesn't have the visual part, she couldn't watch it with me. So, it's nice to know you can buy some online.

Hi, yes that would be cool, then you could choose to use the dvs feature or not. They could do it, cause there is enough room on a dvd for both. Action movies need discription, but after a couple of times, it would be cool to watch it without. It should be a standard thing by now! Just my opinions.

I agree. I don't understand why it's so hard. I wish DVD's talked. The Blue Rays are morespacious, so maybe they'll use them to put audio description on movies. Wishful thinking? Maybe.

I think it's a great idea for those who would use them.
However, I doubt their gonna ever be sold at Walmart unless there's a huge stink put up. The only reason why I say that, is because look at labeling materials or Braille paper or anything else like that. They don't sell that stuff at Walmart, & they'll argue that it's because there just aren't enough blind people I'm sure.
I do think it's a good idea though, so if anyone starts up a petition like that, you can count me in!

The ADA act is a sham. Not worth the paper it's written on. However, that's just my personal opinion.

What's really pathetic is that it would not be hard at all for movie-makers to put a DVS track on the DVD with the movie, and you could have the option to play it or not. I mean, they already put closed caption tracks on DVD's, I think, and they have a version of the movie in other languages, usually Spanish, so why not a DVS track, too? It makes no sense.

I actually think this is a good idea. I can watch movies with or without but it surely helps for those nondialogue parts.

Even if DVS movies were sold at say, Blindness Related storessuch as Independent Living Aids, that would still be nice.

yes they put other languages of the movie on the disk, and the close captioning to. We should have the movie both ways on the dvd.

I guess captions take up less room on the DVD. As for audio, I read somewhere that a DVD can hold up to 8 audio tracks. Also size would have to be taken into account.

The DVD has 4 gigs on it, how much is the video on it? I think they could do it if they tried.

Post 17 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Tuesday, 05-May-2009 18:45:23

if they wanted to do audio description, they could. they could compress it to mp3 lame, or something like that. and the quality of the sound would not be very impaired at all. i think it's a case of won't do it, rather than can't do it. Yes there are loads of dvd's with AD on them now, but by no means do all have it on by default.

Post 18 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Tuesday, 05-May-2009 19:28:17

I think one of the issues is getting someone to describe them and describe them well enough for blind people to understand.

Not sure, but I think the RVIB here in Victoria, Australia might have some videos or dvd's with description. Not sure if it's the same thing you guys are talking about though. I'll have to contact somebody at the RVIB first to find out if they do have this feature on dvd's.
